On 16 May 2026, Brussels will once again be awash in all the colours of the rainbow. During Brussels Pride, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and its sister university, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), will be joining forces for the eighth time to celebrate and defend the rights and freedoms of LGBTQIA+ communities. With their new, inspiring banner bearing the slogan "Pride Lights Up the Darkness", both universities are calling on the entire academic community to send a clear message together: against discrimination, stereotypes and taboos, and in favour of freedom, truth and solidarity.
By taking part in Pride, both Brussels universities aim to make visible what they stand for. For VUB, freedom is an active, humanist and democratic principle that is lived, embodied and defended - even when it comes under pressure.
This year, that commitment is expressed in one clear message: "Pride Lights Up the Darkness". In a context of global uncertainty and troubling developments, VUB and ULB are firmly choosing light, knowledge, love and a critical voice.
Brussels Pride has existed for more than 30 years and has grown into a vibrant celebration of visibility, connection and solidarity for LGBTQIA+ communities. This year marks the eighth time that VUB and ULB are taking part.
With a joint parade float, they will make their way through the centre of Brussels, surrounded by music, dance and a sea of colour. They celebrate who they are and what they stand for.
This initiative is part of VUB's public programme, a programme for everyone who believes that scientific knowledge, critical thinking and dialogue are an important first step to create impact in the world.
As an Urban Engaged University, VUB aims to be a driver of change in the world. With our academic edcuational programmes and innovative research, we contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and to making a difference locally and globally.
