Booker Joins Legislation to Keep SNAP and WIC Funded as Trump Administration Fails to Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) cosponsored the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, bipartisan legislation to ensure continued funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act, legislation to extend funding for SNAP and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). This legislation is in response to the Trump administration's refusal to use the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) contingency funds to pay for November SNAP benefits, a decision that contradicts the USDA's own contingency plan in the event of a funding lapse. Senator Booker issued the following statement:

"It is unconscionable and cruel that the Trump administration is refusing to use the funding at its disposal to continue SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans into November. I have repeatedly called on Trump to stop politicizing food assistance and release the contingency funds.

"As the Republican shutdown continues, I am increasingly concerned that Trump and his administration will fail to do the right thing. While Republicans delay negotiations on lowering health care costs and reopening the government, I support an 'all-of-the-above' strategy for making sure Americans continue to get the food assistance they need.

Though Trump's release of the emergency funds remains the fastest way to get relief to American families, I support whichever method will get benefits flowing for families again, including taking Congressional action. I am cosponsoring Senator Hawley's bill that would ensure SNAP benefits continue during this shutdown. I also cosponsored Senator Luján's bill that includes funding for SNAP and WIC, a vital program that helps moms and babies afford nutritious food.

"I urge Republican leadership to quickly allow Senators to vote on legislation to continue SNAP and WIC, to ensure 42 million Americans do not go without these necessary benefits. It is also long past time for Republicans to come to the table and work with my Democratic colleagues to prevent significant health care cost hikes and reopen the government."
