UW, Manufacturing Works Address Termination of Federal Support for Wyoming Manufacturing Services

The University of Wyoming and its Manufacturing Works program have received word of a decision by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to withhold federal funding from Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) centers in 10 states, including Wyoming.

This action impacts approximately $700,000 in expected funding for Manufacturing Works, the MEP center serving Wyoming.

Manufacturing Works has been a cornerstone in supporting Wyoming's manufacturing sector for over two decades, providing essential services such as technical assistance, engineering solutions, business consulting, marketing support and financial counseling.

"The withdrawal of federal funds presents a major disruption to the support we can provide Wyoming manufacturers," says Rocky Case, center director for Manufacturing Works. "This reduction will unfortunately lead to a scaling back of some of the critical services -- such as artificial intelligence/machine learning assessments and implementation; critical supply chain optimization; business diversification, including expansion of small and medium manufacturers to support critical emerging energy technologies including modular and micro nuclear energy; and workforce development -- that our clients have depended on for years. Despite this, we remain committed to doing everything possible to support the state's manufacturing community with the resources we still have.

"We are actively seeking alternative funding sources and strategic partnerships to help mitigate the impact of these cuts but, without restored federal support, our ability to deliver the full breadth of services will inevitably be diminished."

"The university looks forward to working with Manufacturing Works, the Wyoming Business Council and other partners to find a way forward," says Parag Chitnis, UW's vice president for research and economic development. "We aim to work with state and local stakeholders to ensure Wyoming's manufacturing sector continues to thrive."

Manufacturing Works appreciates the continued support of its partners, clients and the broader Wyoming community during this critical time, Case says.

"Advanced manufacturing is a fast-growing and important part of Wyoming's economy. As we look to diversify our economy and create opportunities for Wyomingites, partners like Manufacturing Works are critical for our manufacturing base to succeed and grow," says Wyoming Business Council CEO Josh Dorrell. "The Wyoming Business Council is committed to working with Manufacturing Works to navigate the federal funding turmoil and keep them focused on solving problems for Wyoming's manufacturing businesses."
