FORT KENT, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins attended the 34th annual Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog races in Fort Kent. Senator Collins delivered remarks at the race before counting down the start of the 250-mile Irving Woodlands Can-Am (IWC) 250. She spoke with the teams, thanked volunteers, and met with attendees while joining in the festivities.
"The Can-Am Crown races are a signature winter tradition and a truly special event in The County, bringing together competitors, volunteers, and spectators from across the United States and Canada, all while supporting the community of Fort Kent and showcasing the region's strong cross-border ties," said Senator Collins. "It was an honor to count down the start of the 250-mile race, as was getting the chance to take a ride on a sled myself!"
The Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races include three races: a 30-mile race, a 100-mile race, and the famous 250-mile race, which is a qualifier for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest sled dog races.
Senator Collins has attended the Can-Am Crown several times since being elected to the U.S. Senate. In 2024, she urged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to revise requirements for bringing dogs into the United States that would have created unnecessary obstacles for mushers and other dog owners crossing the U.S.-Canada border. After repeated outreach from Senator Collins and other northern border state Senators, the CDC announced it would initiate a new rulemaking process. In the interim, the agency streamlined requirements for dogs entering from rabies-free countries like Canada, allowing the Can-Am Crown to proceed without disruption to international participants.
