As Americans hit the road this summer and fuel demand increases, the Environmental Protection Agency has once again allowed the nationwide sale of E15-also known as Unleaded 88-during these busy months.
Today, the "regular" gasoline you see at the pump is E10, meaning it contains a 10% ethanol blend. But if you're not filling up on E15, you're missing out on the more affordable fuel that makes the most of what ethanol has to offer.
E15 is made with 15% ethanol and is suitable for cars model year 2001 and newer. Increased access to higher ethanol blends is always great news, both for your road trips and for our country. Here's why:
E15 is easier on your wallet. This option offers Americans financial relief at the pump, and the proof is in the savings: Drivers who chose E15 last summer over the standard E10 saved 10-30 cents per gallon. More miles for less money is the kind of math we can all get behind.
The economic benefits of E15 go beyond the pump, fueling our entire economy. In 2024 alone, the ethanol industry directly supported 56,000 jobs, created $28.3 billion in household income, and added $53 billion to our GDP.
This domestic fuel is vital to maintaining national security and economic stability, allowing us to increase our energy independence. The U.S. is the #1 ethanol producer in the world, supplying over half of the global market. Last year, ethanol displaced over 630 million barrels of imported crude oil. By producing our own fuel, we're mitigating instability and strengthening our energy independence.
In 2024, the ethanol industry generated over $10 billion in tax revenue, most of which went to supporting our rural communities, including rural schools and infrastructure. Choosing E15 is an investment in Main Street, not Wall Street.
With millions of Americans hitting the road this summer, choosing E15 is not just easier on the wallet, it's also easier on the air. E15 reduces harmful tailpipe emissions by roughly 46%. Unlike regular gasoline, ethanol burns cleaner and is a step in the right direction towards more sustainable fuel consumption.
Rural America is working hard to lower the cost of gas and build a stronger and more resilient economy. When you stop at the gas station this summer, you have the choice to power your travels with an affordable, safe and reliable biofuel thanks to America's corn growers.
