SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE OVER $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NORTH COUNTRY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Today, U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that they secured $1.1 million in federal funding for two critical projects in the North Country in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 funding package that was signed into law yesterday. The senators personally secured funding for these projects as congressionally directed spending items.

"This more than $1 million investment will support critical community projects in the North Country. From creating more affordable housing opportunities to boosting our local workforce, we are building a better future for New Yorkers throughout North Country," said Senator Schumer. "These projects will help local institutions support economic growth, while create new work opportunities. I will always fight to deliver more federal resources for institutions in the North Country to support the community's needs."

"These federal dollars will power real growth in the North Country," said Senator Gillibrand. "By supporting the development of workforce housing and training programs for advanced manufacturing skills, these funds will help working-class New Yorkers get safe housing and good-paying jobs. I'm proud to have helped secure these funds, and I'll keep fighting to bring more federal dollars home to Upstate New York."

The federal funding comes from the FY2026 funding package that was signed into law yesterday and includes the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill and the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education funding bill, among others.

Funded projects in the North Country:

$750,000 for the Lake Champlain - Lake George Regional Planning Board for Workforce Housing Development

This funding will support the development of workforce housing in the North Country to address the high cost of residential construction and limited construction workforce in the Adirondacks. This project will seek to provide pathways to homeownership near major employment centers to connect job seekers with long-term employment opportunities.

$350,000 for the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce's Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development Program

This funding will subsidize training in advanced manufacturing skills for the greater Plattsburgh community in partnership with Clinton Community College. A skilled workforce will not only see more opportunities for upward mobility but also benefit the local economy and regional employers who are facing a shortage of skilled labor.
