If you've driven near the intersection of Main Street and the I-45 feeder road, then you've most likely seen the gigantic mural on the side of the shopping plaza that houses the Dollar Tree and Jumping World. The mural is part of League City's Public Art Initiative and was designed and painted by Adam Socie who goes by the name Pilot Graff, which is short for graffiti. Socie, a League City resident, is known in the "graffiti art" community because he uses spray paint to create his murals. This includes his latest mural in League City which features a fisherman, kayaker, and a large egret.
"The whole concept behind the mural is to highlight the waterfront property here in League City," said Socie. "I am a resident of League City and before I started creating and designing this mural, I didn't even know how much waterfront property there is when you include all the creeks and tributaries that run through our community" There is so much beauty and nature to enjoy here."
Socie, who used to paint graffiti as a kid growing up in Deer Park, has refined his spray paint technique to create incredible large-scale works that can be found throughout the Houston region, the United States, and even the world-including a mural on a 20-story building in Moscow. Two additional Socie murals can be found in League City, including one at the municipal pool at Walker Street and another on the caboose at League Park. He's also painted five "mini murals" on traffic signal boxes throughout the city.
"I spent a lot of time painting this latest mural, and it really means a lot to me," said Socie. "I go to the gym right across the street and I am going to see it every day, so I wanted it to be one of my best."
