A person in custody at Scotland Correctional Institution died this morning after being involved in an altercation with other offenders.

David Ruben Green III #1282047 was observed fighting with others in his cellblock around 7:25 a.m. As correctional officers broke it up, Green collapsed. Staff performed emergency medical procedures and called EMS, which pronounced him dead at 7:51 a.m.

As required in the death of someone in custody, law enforcement and the state medical examiner are investigating. The NC Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully in those investigations and is conducting its own.

Scotland Correctional Institution is on lockdown as investigations proceed. No one has been charged at this time.

Green, 30, was convicted of second-degree murder and conspiracy in 2011 in Wake County. His projected date of release was in 2033.
