After the Terrier women's track and field team won the 2025 indoor championship in March, program director Grant Cartwright wanted to get right back to work. While it's great to celebrate the title, he says, he was eager to apply the lessons learned to the outdoor season.

"I'm striving for perfection with this program," says Cartwright, who was named director last June. "Being able to take the trophy home is a great thing, but what can we learn and get even better, and tighten up even better going into the outdoor season?"

Two months later, the BU women's and men's track and field teams are ready to compete in the 2025 Patriot League Outdoor Championship Friday and Saturday at the College of the Holy Cross Hart Track in Worcester. The men are looking to move up from their third-place finish at the indoor championship, while the women are focused on defending their title.

"We know what we can do. We know we can win, so our goal is to get first again," says thrower Ellie Roan (CAS'26). "We know that's not going to be an easy battle, and everyone has to have one of their best days."

Cartwright emphasizes that the teams need to shift from results-oriented to self-oriented. This is especially important for the women's team, he says.

"It's easy when you're trying to get to the top of the mountain, but then when you actually get there, we have to be the most mindful of where we're putting our team's focus," he says. "That's actually one of the most dangerous times for a program to start getting too caught up in external factors."

He says it's been great to see leaders emerge, from freshmen to fifth-year seniors. Many of the athletes point to the positive and supportive team environment that's developed this spring.

"This year has felt the most like one team than we've ever felt before. I feel like everyone is super close with each other this year," Roan says. "Team morale is super good, everyone's supportive of each other, and I feel like everyone knows that every person on our team has their back."

Long-distance runner Vera Sjöberg (CAS'26) has turned heads throughout her junior season, breaking record after record. In the indoor season, she was named a First-Team All-American, with an eighth-place finish in the indoor mile at the NCAA indoor championship. Most recently, she received Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week honors after breaking the BU program record in the 5,000-meter with a 15:40.76-she now owns five school records. At this week's Scarlet & White Awards Ceremony, Sjöberg was the only athlete to receive two awards: the Mildred Barnes Award and the Woman of the Year honor.

"I'm just most proud of her personal development and how she leads by example," her coach says. "She still has even higher goals and aspirations that we want to continue to support, and I think that she can accomplish some really special things this year as well."

One key group this season is the horizontal jumps, which swept the Patriot League Indoor Championship podium. The throws group is another one to look out for, Cartwright says. Roan, for example, will be defending her title in the hammer toss.

He also points out the sprinters, who have consistently posted personal bests throughout the season, as well as the mid-distance runners. In particular, Olivia Dodds (CAS'26), who has been "on fire, this season, he says.

On the men's side, Cartwright doesn't shy from calling the 800-meter group "one of the best in the country." In throws, he cites Luke Riordan (CAS'28), who has had a strong couple of weeks. And he's excited to see what the sprint and jump groups do this weekend. Jumper Guy Margalit (CAS'28) recently earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week, recording the second-longest jump in the conference this season.

"Every single person that we have on the bus has been having a really spectacular season," Cartwright says. "I always say to mention one, you've got to mention all, because it's still a team effort at the end of the day."

In order for both teams to have success this weekend, their coach has a three-pronged approach: continue the momentum from the indoor season, fight for every inch, and work together as a team.

"We're one program, one team. It's about everybody that has Boston University on their chest," he says. "We do those three things, and the results are going to come."

The Patriot League Women's and Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships are Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3, at the College of the Holy Cross Hart Track in Worcester, Mass.
