Flick a Definitive ‘Yes’ on Bill to Create Separate Playoffs for Public and Private Schools

Apr. 29, 2026

HARRISBURG - Rep. Jamie Flick (R-Lycoming/Union) today voted in favor of a bill that would create a fairer playoff system in high school sports.

House Bill 41 would allow the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) to create separate playoffs and championships for boundary and non-boundary schools.

"I was eager to vote in favor of this bill," Flick said. "I regularly hear about the defeated feeling for young athletes who advance all the way to a state championship game, only to compete against a private school with greater funding and the ability to recruit top athletes."

The bill would allow the schools to play in the same bracket or division all season, but when it comes to championships or state competition, the schools are placed into appropriate brackets to make competition more even.

"I get calls regularly from parents, principals, athletic directors and superintendents who tell me about the unfairness surrounding this issue," Flick said. "We have to ensure balance where competing schools are bound to the same set of rules."

House Bill 41 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
