Meru gas flaring to deliver major emissions reduction

Published on Tuesday, 18 August 2026 at 1:54:04 PM

Completion of the Meru Waste Management Facility Gas Flaring Project marks a major milestone in reducing the City of Greater Geraldton's largest source of corporate greenhouse gas emissions.

Delivered in partnership with LMS Energy, the project captures methane generated through the decomposition of waste at Meru landfill and safely combusts it through a high-temperature flare.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune said the completion of the project demonstrates the City's commitment to taking practical action on climate change while delivering value for ratepayers.

"The completion of this project is a significant accomplishment for the City as we continue working towards our 2030 net zero emissions target," he said.

"As the source of more than 80% of our corporate emissions, the Meru Waste Management Facility presented the greatest opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our carbon footprint through methane abatement.

"What's particularly pleasing is that this approximately $4 million project was delivered at no cost to the City, with LMS Energy funding and constructing the system in exchange for the environmental credits.

"It's a win-win outcome that delivers substantial emissions reductions while ensuring no financial impact on ratepayers."

The long-term gas collection and flaring system is expected to reduce up to 900,000 cubic metres of methane each year, providing a substantial environmental benefit for the Greater Geraldton community.

The project supports the City's Achieving Net Zero Corporate Climate Change Mitigation Plan and responds to community feedback identifying climate action as a key priority.

This project aligns with the Liveable theme of the City's Strategic Community Plan and reflects the organisation's commitment to improving waste management and mitigating climate change.
