Carson City, NV - Today, Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford announced a federal court has dismissed the Trump administration's attempt to force Nevada to turn over the state's unredacted voter rolls. This is the 22nd loss for the Trump administration in its campaign to unlawfully force states to turn over unredacted voter rolls.
"This is a monumental win for the privacy of Nevadans and the protection of our elections," said Attorney General Ford. "The Trump administration's attempt to force our state to share these unredacted voter rolls was nothing more than an intimidation tactic designed to continue the president's campaign to sow doubt in our elections. Nevada's elections are free, fair and safe, and our state will protect the sensitive data of all Nevadans."
U.S. District Judge Anne Traum ruled that the federal government does not have the power to demand access to unredacted voter rolls, which contain the driver's license numbers and partial Social Security numbers of Nevada voters. The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that the federal government can access these records under Title III of the Civil Rights Act of 1960 - a claim that has been found false by almost two dozen courts around the country.
Attorney General Ford has fought alongside Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar to ensure Nevada's elections remain safe from federal overreach. For example, on June 24, he secured a victory against the Trump administration's attempt to implement an unlawful executive order that would have spurred unprecedented interference in Nevada's state-administered voter registration systems and databases and required significant voter outreach and education to ensure the public understood the new restrictions on voting by Election Day. Both of these burdensome necessities under the executive order's unlawful mandates would have been done at Nevada's expense. Attorney General Ford co-led a coalition of states in a challenge to this order.
The very next day, June 25, Attorney General Ford secured another win against yet another unlawful executive order issued by President Trump that attempted to require unnecessary voter registration requirements; force states to ignore mail ballots that are cast by Election Day but received by election officials just days afterward; and withhold federal funding from the States if they fail to comply. Once again, Attorney General Ford was a lead in the coalition of states fighting against this federal overreach.
