CHPA Celebrates International Self-Care Day and the Value of Consumer Healthcare Products

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the leading voice advocating for policies that expand access to trusted consumer healthcare products, released the following statement in recognition of International Self-Care Day.

On International Self-Care Day, CHPA celebrates the essential role self-care products play in helping individuals and families maintain their health, manage common conditions, and make informed decisions about their wellbeing. From over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to dietary supplements and OTC medical devices, these products help consumers appropriately manage everyday health needs while strengthening the overall U.S. healthcare system.

"Self-care is an essential part of a healthier America," said CHPA President & CEO Scott Melville. "Every day, millions of Americans depend on trusted self-care products to safely and effectively manage everyday health needs. Expanding access to these products empowers consumers, reduces unnecessary strain on our nation's healthcare system, and should remain a public health priority. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing policies that make self-care more accessible, affordable, and effective."

The benefits of self-care extend far beyond individual health. Each year, self-care interventions deliver significant value across North America, saving an estimated 1.3 billion hours and $31.8 billion in healthcare-related costs.

Background:

Observed annually on July 24, International Self-Care Day is a global moment to recognize the vital role self-care plays in supporting individual wellbeing and strengthening public health systems. The date-7/24-serves as a reminder that self-care is a commitment we can make 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Since its launch in 2011 by the Global Self-Care Federation, International Self-Care Day has grown into a worldwide movement that encourages personal responsibility for health and celebrates the positive impact of informed self-care choices. More than 30 states across the country have recognized the importance of self-care by adopting resolutions or issuing proclamations highlighting its significance.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), founded in 1881, is the national trade association representing the leading manufacturers and marketers of consumer healthcare products, including over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, dietary supplements, and OTC medical devices. CHPA is committed to empowering self-care by ensuring that Americans have access to products they can count on to be reliable, affordable, and convenient, while also delivering new and better ways to get and stay healthy.
