Born in Phnom Penh in 1979, Sokhoeun Sok's love of dance began at an earlyage. As a child in Cambodia, she studied at one of the country's leading dance schools, the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh, where her aunt was an instructor. With over 36 years of experience in Cambodian dance, Sokhoeun has devoted her life to preserving and sharing this beautiful tradition.
As she explains: "The art itself is really to describe the way of life of Cambodian people. I hope to share what I have with the next generation of students, so they can learn, know about the dance, and share it with others."
Now living in Westbrook, Maine, Sokhoeun continues her aunt's legacy by teaching Cambodian dance to new generations. She is widely recognized throughout Maine and New England as an exceptional dancer and teacher-respected for her artistry, generosity, and deep commitment to passing on traditional dance. Currently teaching at Khmer Maine in the Portland area, Sokhoeun Sok is also a mentor in the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. Her apprentices are July Kim, Angel Chhoeung, Thyda Kimball, and Sarta Sam.
