WASHINGTON - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today met with members of the Illinois State Association of Counties to discuss the impact of the Trump Adminsitration's so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which slashed $1 trillion from federal Medicaid funding and nearly $200 billion from SNAP, dramatically shifting cost burdens to local governments and cutting services for Illinoisans. During today's meeting, the Senators and the county leaders also discussed the need for affordable housing and local infrastructure priorities ahead of the next surface transportation reauthorization, as Bipartisan Infrastructure Law programs and funding runs through September 30, 2026.
"The decisions the President makes in the White House have real impacts on the people of Illinois. He has repeatedly targeted our state by freezing promised federal funds, jeopardizing critical transportation and infrastructure projects, and it has harmed our economy and threatened Illinoisans' jobs," Durbin said. "While the President and congressional Republicans are busy scheming to cut health care programs and halt transportation projects, Senator Duckworth and I remain committed to fighting for Illinoisans."
"Whether it's illegally freezing funds or destroying Medicaid, Trump is hurting the same families he swore to protect by jeopardizing programs they rely on," Duckworth said. "I'm glad I had the chance to meet with the leaders of the Illinois State Association of Counties alongside Senator Durbin to discuss how Trump's chaos is driving up costs for communities across Illinois. We'll keep pushing back and sticking up for families."
