Rep. Tony Gonzales Introduces Legislation to Restart the Remain in Mexico Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) joined Congressman Brandon Gill (TX-26) in introducing the REMAIN in Mexico Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy, officially known as the migrant protection protocols, was first implemented by the Trump administration in January 2019. The protocols allow the U.S. government to return foreign individuals who illegally entered the U.S. through the southern border to Mexico to await immigration proceedings. This legislation would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to reimplement the Migrant Protection Protocols in accordance with the 2019 Homeland Security memorandum titled "Policy Guidance for Implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols."

For four years, our Texas communities have been ground zero for millions of illegal border crossings, and the chaos that has followed," said Congressman Tony Gonzales. That is why I am proud to help introduce the REMAIN In Mexico Act, which restarts this much-needed, common sense policy that puts Americans first."
