WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) joined Congressman Brandon Gill (TX-26) in introducing the REMAIN in Mexico Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy, officially known as the migrant protection protocols, was first implemented by the Trump administration in January 2019. The protocols allow the U.S. government to return foreign individuals who illegally entered the U.S. through the southern border to Mexico to await immigration proceedings. This legislation would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to reimplement the Migrant Protection Protocols in accordance with the 2019 Homeland Security memorandum titled "Policy Guidance for Implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols."
"I have the honor and responsibility of representing the largest border district in Congress. All 29 counties I serve have been turned upside down by the dire situation President Biden's disastrous border policies. For four years, our Texas communities have been ground zero for millions of illegal border crossings, and the chaos that has followed," said Congressman Tony Gonzales. "This was not the case when President Trump was in office. Americans were protected from this madness, and President Trump's Remain in Mexico policy was a big reason for that success. That is why I am proud to help introduce the REMAIN In Mexico Act, which restarts this much-needed, common sense policy that puts Americans first."
"The Biden administration's outrageous open border policies have destroyed our immigration system, abandoned the rule of law, and harmed millions of American citizens. Enough is enough. Republicans campaigned on the promise to secure the border, and in November, the American people gave them a mandate to deliver. The REMAIN In Mexico Act is an important step to protect American citizens and begin restoring stability to our broken immigration system," said Ryan Walker, Heritage Action Executive Vice President.
