Taika Waititi on Finding "Klara and the Sun" in an Airport Store
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/AXvtGicPi4cA
Drew: The minute it started, I cried real early in the film, but I know this is this beloved book. Did you pass by this in an airport?
Taika: Yes, I did, I was in an airport looking for something to read on a plane, but this one stood out to me and it was just, you know, it's a beautiful story about a, a robot set in the near future where you, people are so disconnected you have to buy a robot friend for your, for your teenager, for your child. It's set, you know, we're at a time when we've done something so terrible with the internet and just misused it that they took it away from us.
Drew: And, do you think that could really ever happen?
Taika: I'd love that to happen. I would love that to happen, it feels close. It feels like we're close.
Amy: I just went, that would be great.
Drew: I mean, what's so amazing is you guys address that, but you have also helped talk about it in a way where I find I all of my fear is helping me navigate this world as a parent, but it doesn't make the fear go away and the anxiety and your film made me feel better about the world I live in and I don't find that enough. I feel like things are instilling me more to stay vigil and I felt like everything ultimately, no matter what is going to be OK because we get back to the humanity of it all.
Jenna Ortega on Her Habit of Staring at People as a Child Helping Her With This Role
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/D0WWWIe8o82J
Drew: Is it true you stared at people when you were young, because boy did that come in handy for the most beautiful eyes.
Jenna: I still do. I'm so bad, it's like almost, it's borderline aggressive.
Taika: It's unsettling. It still happens. It's very unsettling.
Jenna: Yeah, you'll catch it. I just am so interested to the way that people move and operate and it was, yeah, it was really handy for a character like this where the whole time I spend like, I play like this old artificial friend who has been in the store for years and nobody wants her because she's really a terrible version, like old, outdated and kind of weird and just a little bit too intense, and that's my role in the, I've been there for years in the store just kind of looking out at people through the storefront if I got, if I was lucky enough to even be put up there, so yeah, the staring and the stalking people when I was younger really came in handy for this.
Jenna's Advice to Young Girls on Being Less Self-Critical
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/eaOn10aSuJsw
Drew: What parenting advice could I ask you for my daughters? What do you think?
Jenna: It was, it's kind of what you were saying in terms of just stop, don't think about yourself, and it ties to it just again like we're looking at ourselves too much, we're too aware of our own bodies. We're too aware of our space. Everything, you have time, everything's gonna work out in the way that it's meant to, and don't, as somebody who like it can be super self-critical and I know just young women in general are and it's hard when society is kind of stifling them a bit, it's just you, you can't be so self-critical. You're gonna make so many mistakes. The mistake you made now is probably not even gonna be half as bad as the next, and then the next, and then, but yeah, but then it's all, it's all learning.
Amy: I love you saying this because coming from you is so important for young girls to hear because I just sound like a mom.
Amy Adams on Her Mom Becoming a Body Builder After Having 7 Kids
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/tAjHxMaQEq96
Drew: Is it true your mom was a bodybuilder?
Amy: Yes, this is true, yeah.
Drew: And had 7 kids.
Amy: She had 7 children, and then she was a bodybuilder, yeah. She's still like, I went to see her in Colorado. She has a knee replacement. She's like, 'Let's go for a little hike.' It was 6 miles.
Like she's, it's just kind of how she is. She's very active.
Drew: Is there a chance for me?
Amy: I'll do it with you.
Drew: Wait, like, how did your mom find the motivation? And this gives me hope that I could dedicate the last decades of my life to something physical.
Amy: I'm not sure how she got the motivation, but she did end up getting a job at a gym, so she would work out there. She did amateur bodybuilding. We used to go to competitions on the weekends…I was more of a dancer, so I was like 'I like when their hands are like this.'
Jenna: Don't they have teachers for that? Doesn't like someone come in and teach you how to pose?
Amy: Yeah, I mean, I don't know if they had that then. I mean this was a couple of years ago.
Jenna on Wanting to Take Up Carpentry
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/HeZPXw4DQUCV
Drew: OK, so if you were to like say all of a sudden I'm gonna pick up a new trade and take it real seriously and like dedicate my time to it and actually become it, what would it be?
Jenna: I've been saying carpentry. I really want to make boxes. No, someone just got me a box book for my birthday. Like, how to make, I'm so serious. I would get to use an industrial saw.
I could make a room. I could make a set if I wanted to, and I got really good at it. I just like, I want to be able to something tangible like that.
Taika: You can just turn your brain off while you work with your hands.
Jenna: It just looks so peaceful.
Taika on Writing a Romcom with Wife Rita Ora & Amy on Learning the Dance from "Never Been Kissed"
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/IeDSBJOdbBCV
Drew: Is it true that you would like to make a romcom together?
Taika: Yeah we're writing a romcom together. I'm not gonna tell you guys what it's about. Gonna ruin it. But yeah I've just gotten back into watching romcoms. Your ones, your romcoms.
Drew: I love your romcoms are you kidding.
Amy: 'Never Been Kissed.'
Drew: I am Josie Grossie.
Amy: Do you know how many times I do Josie Grossie's dance from the bar.
Drew: Oh I know it so well. The feather boa.
Amy: Yes the feather boa.
Amy on Watching "Drop Dead Gorgeous" with Her Daughter for the First Time
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/wDM8mcJSKzJs
Amy: I loved it so much. I had so much fun. I had no idea where my life was going but I just loved being there in that moment and I recently got to show it to my daughter for the first time at sixteen. I straighten her hair when I can in the morning. We'd watch it while I was straightening her hair and so that was fun. Because she only, you know I had her at thirty-five so she just doesn't know me as a 23-year-old at all so it was fun to get to see her mom be a little nutty.
