Chris Stapleton made a surprise appearance during Miranda Lambert 's concert on Thursday night (October 1) in Nashville, Tennessee.
Lambert became the first artist ever to headline The Truth, a 4,400-capacity venue that just marked its grand opening in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood of Music City. The most-awarded artist in Academy of Country Music history surprised the sold-out audience when she invited Stapleton to the stage. The two Grammy-winning country stars delivered a rendition of "A Song To Sing," which they debuted in summer 2025. It was the first track Lambert wrote for her new studio record, Crisco, which arrived on Friday (October 2). She and Stapleton wrote it with Jesse Frasure and Jenee Fleenor, telling "the truth of giving one's soul to the music and heart to the one at home," according to a press release issued at the time. They also "had ourselves a time at the skating rink," filming the retro, '70s-inspired music video.
"Chris understands the emotion of this song from the inside out, because he and Morgane [Stapleton's wife] have both lived it," Lambert said on her Instagram story last year. "To have someone so soulful and willing to go into the heart of the feelings, to share the pull of the road and creative life - and what that means when you love someone with every bit of your being is next level. When we finished it, we both knew we wanted to release it, to share it with everyone."
Lambert's surprise duet with Stapleton was a highlight moment during her show, which included songs from Crisco and favorites spanning her career. Lambert said "it was magical" to hear her songs performed for the first time with a 12-piece string section. The new country-disco album also includes "Snakeskin Boots" with Ella Langley, "Two Things Can Be True," "Till The Going's Gone," "Sunset Marquis" and more.
"I've made a lot of records with a lot of heavy subjects over the years," Lambert reflected on Friday morning. "This album feels mostly lighthearted. It's refreshing to get up on stage and sing something fun. Making this record also unlocked a 'time to do whatever I want' feeling. Being able to create freely without putting parameters around my art has been really, really fun. I don't think I've ever smiled that much in the studio.
"I hope when people listen to Crisco, it feels familiar while also feeling fresh," she said. "They can grab onto something that feels nostalgic, put their roller skates on and go on the journey with us."
