Work Readiness Program: ‘It helped me believe that I could be a valuable employee despite my challenges’

Marianna Stringer is a wheelchair user and a participant of our Work Readiness Program. The program supports people with disabilities with:

  • Resume building
  • Accommodations
  • Managing benefits
  • Interview process
  • Networking

She reflects on the impact it had on her employment journey.

Why did you join the Work Readiness Program?

I joined the Work Readiness Program because I was struggling to find a job that understood and accommodated my disability-related needs. I wanted support in building my confidence and learning how to communicate those needs effectively.

The program seemed like a safe place to explore what meaningful employment could look like for someone like me. I was also hoping to connect with others going through similar experiences.

What impact did it have on your employment journey?

The program completely changed how I approached my job search and interviews. It gave me tools to advocate for myself and helped me understand what accommodations I was entitled to. I also learned how to talk about my disability in a professional way, without feeling ashamed.

Most importantly, it helped me believe that I could be a valuable employee despite my challenges.
