At Thursday's weekly Cabinet meeting, Premier Cho Jung-tai was briefed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on its Water Leakage Rate Reduction Plan. The premier said that under this plan implemented by the ministry over the past 12 years, Taiwan Water Corporation's leakage rate has decreased significantly, from 19.55% in 2013 to 11.99% in 2024.
In order to achieve environmental and industrial sustainability in the face of the extreme weather challenges posed by climate change, the government must ensure that the nation's water resources are both sufficient and secure, the premier said. To that end, the Executive Yuan has approved an additional NT$80.77 billion (US$2.5 billion) in funding over the next eight years, with one goal being to reduce the leakage rate to 10% by 2031, in line with the leakage benchmarks of other advanced countries. The plan also aims to implement smart management systems for Taiwan's tap water supply network, thereby strengthening the nation's water supply resilience.
