Via Christi St. Joseph has successfully completed Phase 2 of its $22 million emergency department improvement project, significantly enhancing its capacity and specialized care capabilities for the Wichita community.

This construction phase adds 21,000 square feet to the emergency department (ED), expanding its total footprint to 36,000 square feet. It also adds 20 new beds, bringing total ED beds to 49, in addition to an 11-bed psychiatric observation area specifically designed to provide rapid stabilization and immediate care for behavioral health patients. Additional improvements include a new temporary patient entrance, waiting room and triage area; a permanent EMS entrance; and a new parking lot situated north of the emergency department.

The newly finished areas will open to patients in stages, beginning Wednesday, October 22, with additional spaces - including the psychiatric observation area - becoming available soon after.

Remaining Phase 3 construction will focus on completing an expanded waiting area. This work and project completion is expected in Summer 2026.

The project is fully funded by an appropriation from the Kansas Legislature and Governor Laura Kelly using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
