6 ways to un-waste Waverley this Earth Day

We're lucky to live in one of the most picturesque and iconic corners of this beautiful planet, so this Earth Day, we're sharing simple ways to show some love to the place we call home.

As a council, we are working towards an 80% recovery rate from all waste streams by 2030, when compared to 2017/18 levels. Here are six ways you can help us to un-waste Waverley and do your bit for our little corner of planet earth!

Give your old items a new life and save them from landfill

Did you know there are several places you can go to around Waverley to repair your old or broken items and extend their lifespan? Visit one of our fantastic Repair Café events, where our volunteers can help mend clothes, electronics, jewellery, and more. Or check out our In the Loop website to find businesses around Bondi Junction where you can repair, reuse, refill and recycle various products.

Feed the Earth with homemade compost

Just like us, the Earth needs good nutrition. Making your own compost at home is a great way to improve the quality of your soil, which the plants will love, and use up food scraps that otherwise stink up the bins and go to landfill. Get a discount on composting equipment through our Compost RevolutionThis external link will open in a new window. Plus, with Compost Awareness Week just around the corner, there are plenty of events happening that will turn you into a compost pro.

Get recycling right with Recycle Mate

Council's newest website feature, powered by our partners, Recycle MateThis external link will open in a new window, helps you take the guesswork out of recycling and waste disposal. Search for an item you need to dispose of and let Recycle Mate tell you where it can go - either in your red, yellow or green lid bins at home, or if not, to a local disposal facility. Try out this new feature, or check out Council's A-Z of recycling, here.

Switch up (and turn off) your power supply

Council run a range of programs to help homes, schools, businesses and strata buildings save money on their energy bills and transition to renewable sources. Whether you'd like to explore going solar, transition to an all-electric home or invest in an electric vehicle as we roll out the largest on-street charging network, we can give you a helping hand.

And remember that little things like turning off appliances, light switches and water taps go a long way to helping our planet and your pocket!

Say no to single use, reuse instead!

The most sustainable way to live is to reuse what is already available to us. This means ditching plastics and disposable products for reuseable products. This includes using mugs, keep cups, water bottles, glass jars, Tupperware, shopping bags, bathroom & hygiene products, and more! If you're in the Bondi Junction area without your keep cup, stop by Waverley Library and borrow a mug from our Mug LibraryThis external link will open in a new window.

Donate your clothes (and more) to charity shops

We all know about clothing bins, but you can donate almost anything (if it's in okay condition!). Check out organisations like The Reconnect ProjectThis external link will open in a new window for old devices, Candle ExchangeThis external link will open in a new window for old candle jars, and ReLoveThis external link will open in a new window for old furniture, or just Google what you want to rehome.
