Democrats always talk about how they deliver, and they certainly did with billions in new tax hikes for working families after Senate Bill 25 was signed into law today. We learned a lot from this past veto session and one thing is clear: Illinois must do better. Families and businesses have watched their electric rates sky rocket this past summer because of progressive policies. Senate Bill 25 opens the door to an $8 billion hike in power bills, fewer jobs, and a less reliable energy supply. The truth is, this not an energy plan- it's an environmental giveaway that gives unelected bureaucrats power to raise rates. House Republicans voted against the bill and Rep. Mike Coffey issued the following statement:
"Our state is facing an energy crisis of our own making," said Coffey. "The most recent report from three state agencies is a clear sign that our state is not in a position to eliminate coal-fired power plants. The policies that Illinois Democrats continue to pass out of the Capitol not only cause our monthly bills to go up, but at some point there simply will not be enough energy produced to meet our demands."
The 2025 Resource Adequacy Study by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Power Agency, and the Illinois Commerce Commission warns that "conditions create a credible risk of regional capacity shortfalls that will impact Illinois' future ability to import power during critical hours and may cause reliability issues in Illinois even if Illinois market zones have enough capacity to meet their [resource adequacy] requirements as determined by [PJM and MISO]."
