FRV Australia commissions Terang, its First Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Project in Australia

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) Australia, a leading developer of sustainable energy solutions, and part of Jameel Energy and the Canadian infrastructure fund OMERS Infrastructure, has announced the successful commissioning of Terang, its first utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Australia.

Located in Terang, in the state of Victoria, the project has a capacity of 100 MW / 200 MWh, helping to strengthen the stability and resilience of the electricity grid.

The commissioning of Terang marks a crucial milestone for FRV Australia, as it becomes the company's first standalone battery energy storage project, increasing its portfolio of operational assets in Australia to nine and adding dispatchable energy capacity to FRV Australia's predominantly solar generation portfolio.

The project was further bolstered by an AUD 7 million grant awarded through the second round of the Victorian Government's Energy Innovation Fund (EIF), supporting the deployment of new grid-forming inverter technology. This initiative forms part of the Victorian Government's efforts to achieve its target of 65% renewable energy generation by 2030.

Canadian Solar served as EPC contractor for the project, with TEC-C delivering the balance-of-plant works. The facility incorporates 48 SolBank 3.0 e battery containers, manufactured by e-Storage, and 38 SMA inverters. The project supported approximately 40 full-time-equivalent roles during the construction and generated business and procurement opportunities for local companies and suppliers.

As part of their commitment to the communities in which they operate, FRV Australia supported several social initiatives throughout the development of the project, including sponsorship programmes for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) and the Terang Mortlake Netball Club.

Terang forms part of FRV Australia's expanding battery energy storage portfolio in Victoria. The company is developing the 250 MW / 500 MWh Gnarwarre Battery Energy Storage System, currently under construction and targeted for completion by the end of 2027.

In addition, FRV Australia also has a pipeline of stand-alone BESS and solar-BESS hybrid projects under development in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
