Today in Ohio, JD Vance compared the Trump-Vance failing economy to not just a sinking ship but the most famous and devastating shipwreck of all time. Vance pushed back against criticisms that he and Trump aren't doing enough to bring down costs by claiming that "you don't turn the Titanic around overnight." While working Americans struggle to put food on the table and pay their rent, Vance insisted that "Americans are seeing lower costs" and "we are on the cusp of the greatest economic year."
Meanwhile, new data released today shows that PCE inflation increased 2.8% over the past year - a higher rate than when Trump took office. Among the biggest drivers of inflation were health care and housing, with health care spending up 25.6% and housing spending up 8.2%. Trump and Vance are steering the economy closer to the iceberg.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Donald Trump and JD Vance have sunk the economy, and they have no intention of rescuing everyday Americans who are being crushed by high prices or shut out by the job market. Trump and Vance can try to gaslight the American people all they want, but it's clear as day that their disastrous economic policies have made life nearly impossible for working families as they secure kickbacks for their billionaire buddies and focus on foreign conflicts. It's no wonder Republicans are dreading the midterms."
Trump and Vance are sinking the economy to record lows, as nearly 70% of Americans are struggling to make ends meet. On top of that, a new report revealed that American consumers and importers - not foreign exporters - are bearing 96% of the costs of Trump's tariffs, and prices are likely to rise even higher. It's no wonder the second Trump coalition has unraveled, with 64% of voters disapproving of his handling of the cost of living.
