Police Board President Kyle Cooper's Statement on CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling's Retirement

On behalf of the Chicago Police Board, I congratulate Superintendent Larry Snelling on his retirement and extend my deepest gratitude for his more than 30 years of dedicated service to the Chicago Police Department and the people of Chicago.

Superintendent Snelling has devoted his professional life to public service and to the difficult, essential work of serving and protecting our city. Throughout his career, and especially during his tenure as Superintendent, he led with intelligence, sound judgment, compassion, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. He understood both the extraordinary demands placed on Chicago's police officers and the importance of earning and maintaining the trust of the communities they serve.

On a personal level, I greatly enjoyed working with Superintendent Snelling and having the opportunity to get to know him. He was smart, sharp, candid, and deeply committed to Chicago. He cared. He showed up. And he made a meaningful difference. In every interaction, it was clear that he took his responsibilities seriously and remained focused on supporting his officers, strengthening the Department, and making all Chicagoans safer.

Superintendent Snelling is the consummate public servant. His retirement marks the conclusion of an extraordinary career defined by service, sacrifice, and dedication to the people of Chicago. His leadership and presence will be deeply missed, and the person selected to succeed him will have enormous shoes to fill.

It was both an honor and a genuine joy to work with Superintendent Snelling. The Police Board and the entire City of Chicago owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for his service, his leadership, and his lasting contributions. I wish him and his family every happiness as he begins this well-earned next chapter.
