Minister of Foreign Affairs Commends Brazil's Support for the Rights of the Palestinian People

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, received today, Monday, the Head of the Representative Office of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the State of Palestine, Ambassador João Marcelo Soares, at the Ministry's headquarters.

Minister Shahin praised Brazil's consistent positions in support of the Palestinian cause, particularly in international forums. She expressed appreciation for Brazil's role in supporting the Palestinian people in their legitimate aspirations to realize an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Minister emphasized that such support constitutes a vital pillar for reinforcing international efforts aimed at ending the Israeli occupation and achieving justice for the Palestinian people.

Minister Shahin also addressed the ongoing acts of genocide and forced displacement being committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people. She called for intensified international efforts to hold Israel accountable and to put an end to its continuous crimes, stressing that peace in the region begins with Palestinians living in peace and security.

Additionally, the Minister extended her congratulations to Brazil on the successful hosting of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and on assuming the chairmanship of UNRWA's Advisory Commission. In this context, she reaffirmed the importance of UNRWA's work and stressed the need for continued political and financial support for the agency by the international community.

For his part, Ambassador Soares expressed his pride in representing Brazil in Palestine and reaffirmed his country's firm and unwavering stance in support of justice, peace, and international law. He also commended the success of the latest round of political consultations between Palestine and Brazil, which took place in March of this year in Brasília.
Following these consultations, both sides discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly the Free Trade Agreement between Palestine and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), which has recently entered into force on a bilateral level between Palestine and Brazil.
