Johnson Votes Against Republican Health Care Plan, Urges Affordable Care Act Tax Credit Vote

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32) voted against the Republican health care plan. The plan would raise health care costs, effectively bans abortion coverage, and kicks millions of people off their insurance. It also fails to extend the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) tax credits - credits that nearly 100,000 of Johnson's constituents rely on to afford their coverage.

At the same time, Johnson urged Republican leadership to schedule a vote on a three-year extension of the ACA's tax credits. Today, a House Democratic discharge petition reached the required 218 signatures to force a vote by the full House. However, Speaker Johnson has refused to bring this bipartisan petition to the floor before the end of the year, when the tax credits are set to expire.

"Americans are about to face thousands of dollars more in health care costs each year - or lose their insurance altogether. This crisis didn't happen by accident. It was created by President Trump and Republicans, and now they're refusing to fix it," said Johnson. "Republicans had all year to act. All year to protect families from skyrocketing premiums. Instead, they did nothing - and in just weeks, costs will surge for millions of Texans. Rather than providing real relief, House Republicans just passed a health care bill that raises costs, refuses to extend critical Affordable Care Act tax credits, and functions as a backdoor ban on abortion coverage by pressuring plans to drop coverage. I will not support any bill that restricts access to abortion or kicks millions of people off their insurance. That's why I voted against the Republican plan. I will continue fighting to extend ACA tax credits and urge Speaker Johnson to put an extension up for a vote before these credits expire so we can stop this health care crisis from getting worse."
