Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay to close Sunday, June 28 for rockfall net delivery

Posted on Jun 26, 2026 in Highways News, Main, News

HONOLULU - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is reminding the public of the full closure of Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay on Sunday, June 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the second and final helicopter delivery of rockfall protection netting.

Emergency vehicles and city buses will be allowed coordinated access through the work zone. The full closure will be dependent on weather conditions.

Following the delivery of the netting, crews will secure the netting to the pre-drilled anchors in the slope. Once the netting is secured, all barriers will be removed and Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay will be restored to two lanes. A concurrent installation of 500 feet of impact fencing on the Hale'iwa side of the work zone is underway and anticipated for completion at the same time as the barrier removal. Slope stabilization work and restoration of the second lane is on track for completion by the end of July.

HDOT appreciates the patience and understanding of the Pῡpῡkea, Sunset Beach and Kahuku communities as we continue work to stabilize the slope above Kamehameha Highway between mile posts 5.4 and 6.2 after boulders fell onto the roadway during a severe storm on April 10.
