RDOS recognizes National Volunteer Week 2026

INFORMATION RELEASE

National Volunteer Week takes place from April 19 to 25, 2026, and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is extending its sincere appreciation to the many volunteers who contribute their time, skills, and expertise to support communities across the region.

Volunteers play a vital role in delivering services, strengthening emergency response, supporting recreation programs and events, and enhancing community well-being. Their commitment helps create safe, active, and connected communities throughout the Okanagan-Similkameen.

Across RDOS Parks and Recreation, volunteers support programs, everyday operations, and community events. Volunteers help instruct and assist recreation programs such as seniors' chair exercise, minor hockey, and youth activities. They also support facility operations and play an important role in community events, including the Similkameen 5K Fun Run/Walk, parades, and seasonal celebrations that bring people together.

The RDOS also recognizes the significant contributions of volunteers who support emergency services and preparedness. This includes volunteer firefighters, search and rescue (SAR) teams, and amateur radio (ARES) volunteers who assist with emergency response and coordination. Emergency Support Services (ESS) volunteers, Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT) volunteers, and FireSmart volunteers provide critical support to evacuees, animals, and communities before, during, and after emergencies.

In addition to hands-on service delivery, volunteers contribute through governance and advisory roles that help guide RDOS programs and services. Members of the RDOS Parks and Recreation Commission volunteer their time to provide advice and recommendations that strengthen parks, facilities, and recreation opportunities across the region.

"From recreation programs and community events to emergency response, volunteers help keep our communities active and connected," said Mark Pendergraft, RDOS chair. "The RDOS is grateful for their time and dedication."

The RDOS offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities across departments and services, including Community Champions who help share timely and reliable information within their communities.
