Jay Shank '28 says that joining the Bonner program has been the best decision she's ever made.
"I came onto campus and immediately had friends, and I feel so connected to Meadville," says Shank, who is a double major in English (with an emphasis on creative writing) and studio art. "Bonner does such an incredible job at actually preparing me for my life, and I felt so much more confident trying to make friends than I would have if I didn't come in with a cohort. It's just so rewarding to have a community that cares so much and is such an important part of my college experience."
As a Bonner, Shank supports the Meadville Market House's social media initiatives to connect the campus with the heart of downtown Meadville. Often, she can be found uncovering stories through video content that informs and delights followers.
Last fall, Shank had the opportunity to attend the Bonner Congress Conference in Chicago, allowing her to learn from programs across the nation. That experience inspired her to expand outreach opportunities for the Bonner Program and highlight its positive impact on and off campus.
For over 25 years, the Bonner Program at Allegheny College has been serving local sites in the greater Meadville region. Each year, it selects a cohort of students who want to grow their capacity as community builders. These students are compensated for their service and many receive financial aid.
