DNC Takes Legal Action in NC Court to Stop GOP’s Attempt to Overturn Free and Fair Elections Arrow

Today, the Democratic National Committee announced legal action to block the Republican Party's attempt to overthrow an election decided by voters more than two months ago. In an unprecedented move, the Republican National Committee, North Carolina Republican Party, and Wake County Republican Party are asking the Superior Court to segregate and throw out more than 60,000 ballots, cast by North Carolina voters, for all state and local elections. The DNC is intervening to protect the rights of North Carolina voters and ensure that they, not right-wing courts, get to decide who their elected officials are.

Today, the DNC will appear in Wake County court to fight for the rights of all North Carolina voters.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:

"For months, North Carolina Republicans have attempted to steal an election in plain sight at taxpayers' expense, seeking to throw away some 60,000 lawful votes cast in the race for North Carolina Supreme Court justice. Today, the Democratic National Committee announced its intervention on behalf of the North Carolina voters who, through a free and fair election, elected Justice Allison Riggs to the state Supreme Court. While Republicans attempt to suppress the votes of their constituents, Democrats will use every tool at our disposal to ensure that voters determine elections - not politicians. On November 5, North Carolina voters elected Justice Allison Riggs. Their voices will be heard."

Additional background below on the DNC's legal actions:

Despite multiple recounts confirming that Justice Allison Riggs won her November election to the North Carolina Supreme Court, her Republican opponent Jefferson Griffin and state and national Republicans have filed repeated, baseless legal actions in an attempt to throw out 60,000 lawfully cast ballots and overthrow a free and fair election.

This week, at the request of Griffin and the GOP, the Republican-led North Carolina Supreme Court blocked the certification of Riggs' election.

Now the Republican Party has gone even further by trying to remove these votes from all state and local elections, including elections that were completely undisputed-until now. In response, today, the DNC announced its intervention against the North Carolina Republican Party and the Republican National Committee to stop the segregation and deletion of these 60,000 ballots, cast by eligible North Carolina voters.
