Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach will host a virtual community meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to provide an update on the Sorrento Trail (Segment One) project. The project proposes a new approximately 425-linear-foot waterside trail along Naples Island, between 5425 and 5455 Sorrento Drive, to enhance public access to the shoreline.
During the meeting, Public Works staff will provide an overview of the project's background and history, proposed improvements, anticipated construction schedule and potential impacts. Community members will also have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what to expect as the project moves toward construction, which is scheduled to begin in summer 2027.
Also known as the Sorrento Alamitos Bay Shoreline Trail, the project originated from a requirement established by the California Coastal Commission (CCC) as part of its approval of the first phase of the Naples Island Seawall Repair project in 2013.
As part of that approval, the CCC directed the City to pursue a local coastal development permit for a public walkway within an existing 15-foot-wide public right-of-way along the northwest shoreline of Naples Island. The requirement, under Special Condition 14 of the California Coastal Commission Coastal Development Permit No. 5-11-085, was intended to protect and enhance public access to Alamitos Bay while addressing public access and recreational impacts associated with the seawall improvements.
Because the Sorrento Trail is connected to the phased Naples Island Seawall Repair Project, its development has taken place over multiple years. Following the CCC's direction, the City conducted extensive community outreach and site analysis beginning in 2015, including stakeholder interviews, an open house and opportunities for residents to provide feedback on potential trail alignments, materials, lighting, accessibility, privacy treatments and improvements to existing vertical accessways connecting Sorrento Drive to the shoreline.
The CCC subsequently established requirements for the trail to be constructed in phases in coordination with the Naples Island Seawall Repair Project. Under those requirements, Segment One must be completed and open to the public before the City can advance the next phase of the seawall project, which is currently in the design phase. Segment One is expected to be completed in Fall 2027.
Upon completion, the Sorrento Trail will provide an accessible and scenic coastal pathway that connects the Naples community to the Alamitos Bay waterfront and fulfills the City's obligations under the Coastal Development Permit.
