Is Expand Energy Stock A Real Bargain

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Expand Energy (EXE) appears cheap. The stock trades at 8.0 times earnings, compared with 22.9 for the median S&P 500 company. The shares have also lost 8.7% over the past year, while the S&P 500 returned 15.1%. Such a low price can mean a good business on sale, or a fair price for profits that may not hold. So what is a buyer actually getting at this price?

What Do Expand Energy Buyers Get At This Price?

Buyers get a business that earned $2.78 billion in net income on $4.0 billion of operating income over the four quarters ended June 2026. Revenue in those four quarters rose 60.3% from a year earlier, compared with 8.4% growth for the median S&P 500 company. Expand Energy gets most of its revenue from natural gas: the Natural Gas segment brought in $10.3 billion of the company's $12.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025.

The company also converts those profits into cash. Its free cash flow equals 11.2% of its market value at the October 23, 2026 close, and the shares pay a dividend yield of 3.4%. Based on these figures, Expand Energy is a profitable gas producer priced well below the typical company. Its revenue rose over the past four quarters, though it fell 19.7% from a year earlier in fiscal Q2 2026.

How Steady Have Expand Energy's Profits Been?

Expand Energy's profits have swung widely. Its operating margin was 29.3% in the four quarters ended June 2026, compared with an average of 15.7% over the three twelve-month periods ended June 2024, June 2025 and June 2026. Three years ago, the margin was higher still, at 42.3% in the four quarters ended June 2023, before falling as low as 7.0% in the four quarters ended June 2025.

Free cash flow surged in fiscal Q1 2026 as a result of high natural gas prices, management said on the July 29, 2026 call, and prices dipped after that quarter. The company's operating margin declined from 36.4% in fiscal Q1 2026 to 24.4% in fiscal Q2 2026.

Management also expects the gas market to stay oversupplied through at least the first half of 2027. At today's multiple, the stock price appears to assume that the past twelve months' profits will not hold.

Expand Energy Buys Twin Eagle And Its Own Shares

Management is spending on its own shares and on a business built to earn from swings in gas prices. Expand Energy agreed to buy Twin Eagle, a natural gas marketing business with over 1,000 customers, for $1.25 billion. Management said the deal helps the company reach premium markets and profit from price volatility. It expects Twin Eagle to add more than $200 million of EBITDA, or profit before interest, taxes and depreciation, in its first year, growing to $350 million a year over the following two years.

Management said on the July 29, 2026 call that the company had repurchased $850 million of stock, or 4% of its outstanding shares. The board has authorized another $1 billion for future buybacks. Management's own goal for fiscal 2026 is production of 7.4 to 7.6 billion cubic feet of gas a day, the same midpoint it gave in April 2026.

A buyer at today's price is betting that the market is underpricing a sound gas producer, rather than paying a fair price for profits that may not hold. Management expects Twin Eagle to add more than $200 million of EBITDA in its first year. Expand Energy's quarterly operating margin is the number to watch when the company reports fiscal Q3 2026 results after the market closes on October 27, 2026.
