Wired for Success: How a National Grant is Expanding Electrical Opportunities Across Northeast Iowa

In a world driven by smart technology, expanding infrastructure and modern construction, the hands that wire our communities are more essential than ever. Yet, for many aspiring tradespeople across Northeast Iowa's rolling hills and rural towns, one of the biggest obstacles between a passion for hands-on work and a great career has simply been distance.

That barrier is about to get significantly smaller.

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) was recently named one of only 10 community and technical colleges nationwide to receive a prestigious Gable Grant from the Lowe's Foundation. This transformative $420,000 in funding will establish a brand-new, state-of-the-art electrical lab and modern training equipment directly at the Peosta campus, bringing local, high-tech instruction closer to home for students across the College's 5,000-square-mile district.

Deep Roots, Bold Future

The timing of the award carries special meaning. As NICC marks its 60th anniversary year guided by the theme "Deep Roots, Bold Future," this investment bridges the College's six-decade legacy of community support with the needs of tomorrow's workforce.

"We are grateful to the Lowe's Foundation for its investment in our region's workforce," said NICC President Dave Dahms. "This grant creates new opportunities for students while helping local employers address the growing demand for skilled electrical professionals. Expanding our electrician program to the Peosta campus is another example of what's possible when education and industry work together to strengthen our communities and build a skilled regional workforce."

Real Skills for High-Demand Careers

Across the country, the demand for skilled trades professionals is reaching critical levels. The U.S. Department of Education projects that as many as 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030. Local contractors, manufacturers and residential builders throughout Northeast Iowa feel that demand every day.

The new lab and equipment in Peosta will give local students a hands-on head start. Whether someone is a recent high school graduate, a career-changer looking for financial stability or an adult learner upskilling through short-term continuing education, the new facilities will offer flexible pathways-from short-term certificates to full degree programs.

Students will train on modern equipment that mirrors real-world job sites, preparing them to walk straight out of the classroom and onto the job.

Part of a National Movement

By earning this Lowe's Foundation Gable Grant, NICC joins a national network of 73 workforce development organizations across 30 states. It's all part of the Lowe's Foundation's broader $250 million commitment to train 250,000 skilled trades professionals by 2035.

"Over the past three years, the Lowe's Foundation has built a national flywheel that is connecting educators, workforce organizations and community partners," said Janice Dupré, Lowe's executive vice president of human resources and president and chair of the Lowe's Foundation. "Funding is just one part of the equation; our greatest impact comes from bringing the entire ecosystem together."
