BOISE - Kory Ray Syverson, 51, of Mountain Home, Idaho, was sentenced to 112 months in federal prison for possession of child sexual abuse material, U.S. Attorney John C. Shirts announced today.
According to court records, Syverson was serving a period of probation under the supervision of the Idaho Department of Corrections Probation and Parole ("IDOC"). Per the terms of his probation, IDOC searched Syverson's residence, and located a cellphone containing child sexual abuse material. The Elmore County Sheriff's Office later obtained a search warrant for the cellphone and located over a thousand files of child sexual abuse material.
Chief U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford also ordered Syverson to serve 15 years of supervised release following his prison sentence and to pay $60,000 in restitution to the victims in the images that he possessed. Syverson will be required to register as a sex offender as a result of his conviction.
U.S. Attorney Shirts commended the work of the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, the Elmore County Prosecutor's Office, IDOC, and Homeland Security Investigations, which led to the charge, and the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Kassandra McGrady who prosecuted the case.
These cases were brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. As part of Project Safe Childhood, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Idaho and the Idaho Attorney General's Office partner to marshal federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
