American Board of Internal Medicine Names Holly Auer as Senior Vice President of Communications

PHILADELPHIA, PA - June 24, 2026 - The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today announced the appointment of Holly Auer, MBE, as Senior Vice President of Communications. In this role, Ms. Auer will lead enterprise-wide communications strategies for ABIM and the ABIM Foundation, overseeing internal and external communications, physician engagement, media relations and brand strategy.

Ms. Auer joins ABIM from Penn Medicine, where she served as Associate Vice President for Communications and led a team responsible for media relations, internal communications, storytelling strategy, publications and social media content across the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the Perelman School of Medicine. Over nearly two decades at Penn Medicine, she directed communications for some of the nation's most significant advances in medicine and health care, including the Nobel Prize-winning research that underpins the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, the development and approval of Kymriah-the first CAR-T cell therapy for cancer-and major clinical and research initiatives that shaped national conversations in medicine.

"Throughout her career, Holly has demonstrated an exceptional ability to communicate complex medical and scientific information with clarity, credibility and purpose," said Furman S. McDonald, MD, MPH, President and CEO of ABIM and the ABIM Foundation. "Her deep experience in healthcare communications, clinician engagement and organizational leadership makes her uniquely qualified to help advance ABIM's mission and strengthen our connections with physicians, key stakeholders and the public. We are delighted to welcome her to ABIM and the ABIM Foundation."

As Senior Vice President of Communications, Ms. Auer will guide efforts to enhance the organization's communications in service of nearly 300,000 ABIM certified physicians by expanding ways in which they can engage with the organization and delivering more customized experiences. She will also help advance ABIM's strategic priorities by communicating the importance and value of board certification and professionalism while furthering the organization's commitment to transparency, research and innovation in physician assessment.

"I am honored to join ABIM and the ABIM Foundation at such an important time in the evolution of medicine," said Ms. Auer. "ABIM is a foundational organization in the nation's healthcare ecosystem, allowing physicians to differentiate themselves and demonstrate they have the medical knowledge necessary to provide excellent patient care. I look forward to leading the creation of clear, innovative communications that meet the complex needs of physicians across a wide spectrum of specialties at every stage of their careers. I'm also enthusiastic about broadening our storytelling to help patients and the public better understand the value of being cared for by a board certified physician."

Prior to her leadership roles at Penn Medicine, Ms. Auer was an award-winning healthcare reporter, working for The Buffalo News, The Post and Courier and Scripps Howard News Service. She also contributed to national publications including Glamour, Self and Prevention. She is a graduate of Syracuse University, where she majored in magazine journalism, and earned a master's degree in bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania.
