Midland Fire and Building Departments Warn Residents of Non-Compliant Smoke Alarms Sold Online

April 11, 2025 - The Midland Fire Department (MFD) and Building Department are reminding homeowners, landlords, and business owners to ensure their smoke alarms meet the State of Michigan's safety standards. Many smoke detectors sold online do not comply with these standards and may be ineffective. Trustworthy smoke alarms are ETL or UL Certified and have a small seal on the back.

If you are unsure whether your smoke alarms meet these safety standards, please visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission's website at https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls and search for the product name to check its status.

Landlords are required to provide smoke alarms compliant with the Michigan Building, Residential, and Fire Codes in all rental properties.

MFD has joined the MI Prevention statewide fire safety campaign through the State Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Fire Services and Michigan's fire safety organizations to reduce the high number of fire deaths, injuries and property loss in Michigan by providing and installing smoke alarms in residents' homes without working alarms and educating the occupants on fire safety practices. To take advantage of this free program, contact Fire Station One at 989-837-3410. Learn more about this program at www.michigan.gov/lara/bureau-list/bfs/miprevention.

For more on housing safety or to schedule an inspection, please contact the City's Building Department at 989-837-3383.
