On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at approximately 10:20 p.m., officers assigned to the Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct responded to reports of a driver slumped behind the wheel of a running vehicle at a stoplight near Northeast 139th Avenue and East Burnside Street. When officers arrived, they located the vehicle, which had crashed into a cement mailbox. The driver, identified as Cory S. Holland, 34, of Portland, was the sole occupant and appeared unresponsive. Officers observed a firearm within reach of the individual. Additional officers responded and positioned their vehicles in a way that they boxed in Holland's vehicle. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to awaken the driver, officers broke a vehicle window and safely detained Holland pending a criminal investigation.
During the investigation, officers determined Holland was a convicted felon. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of three handguns, two unregistered short-barreled AR-15-style rifles, ammunition, and drugs.
Seized firearmsHolland was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center and lodged on the following charges: Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm (five counts), Possession of an Illegal Weapon (two counts), Altering ID on a Firearm, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
"This arrest highlights the vigilance and professionalism of our officers," said Chief Bob Day. "What began as a welfare check quickly evolved into the recovery of multiple illegal firearms and drugs from a convicted felon. Our officers acted decisively to protect the community and prevent the potential for further harm."
The investigation is ongoing.
