IAM Union Mourns Loss of Retired Collective Bargaining Director Tom O’Heron

The IAM Union is deeply saddened by the passing of Tom O'Heron, who was a retired IAM Collective Bargaining Director, lifelong trade unionist, and dedicated advocate for working people. O'Heron was 69 years old.

O'Heron initiated into IAM Local 21 in 1978, beginning a remarkable career of more than 46 years of service to the union. O'Heron trained as a machinist and began his career at the Trane Company in Wisconsin.

His passion for fairness and workplace justice soon led him into union leadership, where he represented his coworkers as Directing Business Representative for District 66 and built a reputation as a thoughtful and determined advocate. That work ultimately led to a career with the IAM International, where he served as Collective Bargaining Coordinator and then Collective Bargaining Director, before his retirement in 2016.

As Director, Tom played a pivotal role in negotiating strong contracts for IAM members, ensuring fair wages, benefits, and protections. His decades of service strengthened the IAM and left a lasting legacy for generations of members.

"Tom O'Heron was a true trade unionist whose work shaped our union and improved the lives of countless working families," said IAM International President Brian Bryant. "He will be remembered for his steady leadership at the bargaining table, his lifelong dedication to fairness, and his unwavering commitment to solidarity."

Beyond his career, Tom lived a life rooted in family, sports, and community. A lifelong baseball fan, he coached his sons for many seasons and later coached girls' high school basketball, which he said kept him young. He also enjoyed golf, watching sports, and supporting his granddaughters in their activities. Known for his easy conversation, warm smile, and deep Catholic faith, Tom served as a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus.

The IAM extends heartfelt condolences to Tom's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His leadership, generosity, and spirit will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local Bangor, Maine charitable organization. Read O'Heron's complete obituary here.
