Ghana to roll out free visa for all Africans from May 2026.

In a landmark move to cement Ghana's position as the hub of Pan-Africanism, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will implement a free-visa policy for all African nationals, effective 25 May 2026.

The President made the historic disclosure at the end of a bilateral meeting with the visiting Zimbabwean President, His Excellency Emmerson Mnangagwa, at the Peduase Lodge. The commencement date coincides with Africa Day, a symbolic gesture intended to honour the continent's unity and heritage.

Under the new policy, Africans travelling to Ghana will be able to apply for and receive their e-visas online free of charge. This initiative is part of a broader e-visa reform program scheduled for rollout in May this year.

"As a cradle of Pan-Africanism, Ghana believes it has a historic responsibility to remain open to Africans from across our continent," President Mahama stated. "We are firmly of the view that African Governments must accelerate the integration agenda for which Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah toiled and sacrificed."

The President noted that the free visa regime is not only a diplomatic gesture but also a strategic economic move designed to advance Pan-Africanism and continental unity, boost tourism by removing entry barriers, and strengthen investment by making Ghana a more accessible destination for African entrepreneurs.

Addressing potential concerns regarding border control, President Mahama assured the public that "adequate systems have been put in place to vet prospective visitors and to ensure that the security of our nation is not compromised."

President Mnangagwa's visit highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, which already enjoy visa-free travel.

"Ghana and Zimbabwe are in-laws; we have a visa-free environment already. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other's country," President Mahama remarked.

The two leaders also discussed global geopolitical challenges, reaffirming their commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and the protection of shared African interests within the United Nations and the African Union.

President Mnangagwa praised the hospitality of the Ghanaian people, noting that the state visit has elevated bilateral relations to a strategic high.

President Mahama concluded by thanking his Zimbabwean counterpart for the visit, noting that it provided a "clear roadmap and fresh momentum" for future cooperation. Plans are already underway for President Mahama's reciprocal visit to Harare.
