Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has extended the activation of its Inclement Weather Shelter, located at the Multi-Service Center (1301 W. 12th St.) for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, through the morning of Thursday, Jan. 23, amid ongoing, fluctuating air quality concerns in areas throughout the county related to the continued fires in Los Angels County. The MSC will not provide case management or other services over the weekend per its standard schedule or on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The MSC will open for regular services at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The Inclement Weather Shelter is an emergency overnight shelter available during extreme weather conditions and has been activated since Jan. 7. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. each day and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required. The shelter can host up to 60 people, with separate sleeping areas for men and women, and offers a variety of amenities and services, including:
Homeless Services Bureau staff will continue to conduct outreach to notify people experiencing unsheltered homelessness of the shelter opportunity. Information is also being shared to registered participants of the City's text alert system. People experiencing homelessness are encouraged to sign up for text alerts about available resources. For English alerts, text "HOME" to 99411. For Spanish alerts, text "HOGAR" to 99411.
The City continues to provide information about air quality, related to the multiple fires in Los Angeles County, to the community. For fire activity maps and related evacuation notices, air quality updates and more, the community can visit longbeach.gov/emergency.
