This week on New Mexico in Focus, Albuquerque Journal reporter Algernon D'Ammassa updates us on the investigation into last month's mass shooting in Las Cruces that killed three teenagers and wounded more than a dozen other people. Executive Producer Jeff Proctor asks D'Ammassa how the people of Las Cruces and its leaders are doing following the most public, jarring act of violence seen in the city in 35 years.
We are only three months into President Donald Trump's second term, and are already seeing several policies described in Project 2025 come to fruition. It's a nearly 1,000-page document produced by the conservative Heritage Foundation and, despite Trump saying he'd never read it, many of its authors now work in his administration. As reporters scramble now to cover the many changes Trump has made from that instruction manual, New Mexico in Focus revisits its conversation last year about Project 2025 with two politics experts, hosted by Executive Producer Jeff Proctor.
Lobo men's basketball has welcomed a new head coach. Eric Olen, who spent the last two decades running the show at UC San Diego, accepted the position to be the University of New Mexico's 23rd men's basketball coach earlier this week. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio speaks with Albuquerque Journal sportswriter Geoff Grammer about Olen's approach to basketball, as well as the legacy of outgoing Coach Richard Pitino.
Journalist Nash Jones is coming to NMPBS after several years at KUNM, where they hosted "All Things Considered," "Morning Edition," "Let's Talk New Mexico," and produced countless pieces for listeners from both the studio and the field. Jones is a proud member of the transgender community who uses they/them pronouns, an Albuquerque native and a multi-award-winning journalist, at the state, regional, and national level. Their first day at New Mexico in Focus will come in the next couple of weeks.
NMiF airs on NMPBS 5.1 (KNME HD) on Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 7 a.m. and streaming on the PBS video app.
