My DCMA showcases the Defense Contract Management Agency's experienced and dedicated workforce and highlights what being part of the national defense team means to them. Today, Sean Sargeant shares his story.
My name is Sean Sargeant, and this is "My DCMA." I am a quality assurance specialist at DCMA Northeast Coastal, and I am based in Garden City, New York. I have been part of the DCMA team for almost four years. My contract management office is a part of the Geographic & Systems Support Command.
My job duties include ensuring contractor processes, products, and services consistently meet contractual requirements, applicable specifications, and quality management standards. I conduct surveillance, analyze performance trends, identify and communicate risks, and work collaboratively with contractors and DCMA's multi-functional team to resolve issues before they affect cost, schedule, performance, or mission readiness. Through objective oversight and proactive engagement, I provide the Department of War and our warfighters with confidence that their critical supplies and capabilities are delivered with the quality, reliability and integrity they require.
Among the many programs and weapon systems capabilities I support are weapons carriage and release systems for the F-35 Lightning II. My workload also includes various bomb rack units supporting the P-8 Poseidon and MQ-9 Reaper, as well as the Sonobuoy Rotary Launcher and Single Launcher for the P-8 Poseidon and the AMRAAM Vertical Eject Launcher, or AVEL, supporting the F-22 Raptor. I also support components for the B-1B Lancer.
Marine Corps discipline
I previously served in the Marine Corps for eight years, including two years on active duty and six years in the Marine Corps Reserve. My primary military occupational specialty was as a satellite communications operator-maintainer, where I established, configured, and maintained satellite communication systems supporting secure, reliable command-and-control communications.
I also served as a field radio operator. I supported tactical voice and data communications through the operation and maintenance of radio systems, antennas, and associated equipment. During my service, I supported Marine Corps communications requirements for commands and installations across the United States and internationally, including Norway, Spain, Australia and Japan.
These experiences strengthened my discipline, technical problem-solving, accountability and ability to adapt to changing requirements. These are qualities that I continue to bring to my team and the DCMA mission.
DCMA is a great place to work
I like working at DCMA because it allows me to contribute to a meaningful mission while continuing to grow professionally. I value the agency's culture of accountability, teamwork, and problem-solving, as well as the relationships built with colleagues, contractors, and customers. I also appreciate DCMA's emphasis on work-life balance, which helps employees remain resilient, engaged and effective both professionally and personally. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to help strengthen acquisition outcomes for the military.
Some of the great things about working at my location include the opportunity to learn from experienced quality assurance specialists and apply their knowledge to strengthen my own professional capabilities. Working alongside seasoned teammates provides valuable perspective, mentorship and collaboration that support continuous improvement. I also value the opportunity to help train and develop new team members by sharing lessons learned, reinforcing quality assurance fundamentals and helping them build confidence in their roles.
As a QAS assigned to one of DCMA's top 500 prime contractors, I can apply and further develop my skills in a complex, fast-paced environment. This responsibility allows me to conduct more in-depth surveillance risk assessments, evaluate a broad range of critical processes and gain a deeper understanding of contractor operations. This experience has strengthened my ability to identify and communicate risk, collaborate effectively with contractors, customers, and our warfighters, to provide meaningful quality assurance support to the mission.
DCMA is important to America's warfighters because the agency provides essential, independent oversight of defense contractors and suppliers, helping to ensure the equipment, supplies, and services our military depends on are delivered when needed, perform as required, and meet contractual quality standards.
The agency connects the factory floor to the front line by identifying risks early, verifying contractor performance, and working across the acquisition enterprise to resolve issues before they affect readiness. In doing so, DCMA helps protect the reliability, safety, and effectiveness of the capabilities provided to our warfighters while ensuring responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources. Our work helps give warfighters confidence that the products supporting their mission are built right, delivered right, and ready when it matters most.
Since I started working at DCMA, I have seen the agency continue to refine its surveillance planning, execution and policy guidance to promote more consistent, deliberate, and thorough oversight across the workload. There has also been an increased focus on using risk-based approaches and technology to improve how we plan, conduct, document and assess surveillance activities.
The agency's tools and data-analytics capabilities have strengthened our ability to track workload, monitor progress, identify trends and maintain visibility of surveillance requirements. These capabilities support accountability, help ensure priorities are addressed and enable quality assurance specialists to make more informed decisions. Overall, these changes have made our processes more data-driven, efficient, and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for our customers and warfighters.
Future career goals
Going into 2027, my goals are to further develop my expertise in quality assurance, risk-based surveillance and contractor operations while growing as a mentor and future leader. I intend to strengthen my leadership skills. I want to help train new team members, share lessons learned and build on our culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement. By sharing knowledge, using available tools and data to maintain visibility of our workload, and maintaining a deliberate focus on surveillance priorities, we can improve consistency, support one another, and deliver even stronger results for our customers and the warfighters we serve.
My future career goals include continuing to strengthen my expertise in quality assurance, risk management and process improvement while expanding my leadership abilities. I aspire to become a team leader and, ultimately, a quality assurance supervisor who sets clear expectations, develops others, and fosters accountability and collaboration. I also hope to serve as a mentor, share knowledge with new team members, and contribute to improvements that strengthen DCMA's support to its customers, and build a career defined by sound judgment, continuous learning, and meaningful mission impact.
Maintaining a work-life balance
My favorite hobbies reflect my interest in continuous learning, creativity and personal growth. Playing the drums provides a creative outlet that reinforces focus, discipline and attention to timing. I enjoy listening to podcasts and exploring emerging technologies because they help me stay informed on new ideas and innovations. I enjoy listening to podcasts on leadership, technology, military history, fitness and personal growth. I am also interested in emerging technologies such as super intelligence, smart-home systems, consumer electronics and aerospace innovation. I like learning about how new ideas and technology can improve everyday life, strengthen problem-solving and shape the future.
Outside of work, I take pride in completing do-it-yourself home improvement projects and maintaining physical fitness, both of which support problem-solving, balance and resilience. I value quality time with my wife and two-year-old daughter. One of my favorite activities is participating with my daughter in her swimming class, where we work together on water-confidence exercises, movement and early swimming skills. It is a meaningful opportunity to support her growth while building lasting father-daughter memories.
Something unique about me is my ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing circumstances, and apply technology to solve problems and improve the way work is accomplished. I enjoy pursuing training and developing new skills because I believe continuous learning is essential to both personal and professional growth.
