Adaptive Kayaking Expands Access to Outdoors

Adaptive Kayaking Program in Partnership with Catalyst Sports, Expands Access to Outdoor Adventure

March 18, 2026

In partnership with Catalyst Sports, Sandy Springs is excited once again to offer an Adaptive Kayaking Program at Morgan Falls Overlook Park, designed to provide individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to experience independence and adventure on the water.

This inclusive program empowers participants to explore the beauty of the outdoors while building confidence, strength, and community. With a focus on safety, accessibility, and individualized support, the Adaptive Kayaking Program ensures that each paddler can fully enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in a supportive environment.

Our goal is to remove barriers and create opportunities for everyone to experience the freedom of being on the water," said Jane Jarrett, City of Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Program Coordinator. "Through our partnership with Catalyst Sports, we are able to provide expert instruction, adaptive equipment, and a welcoming community for paddlers of all abilities.

The program is led by kayak instructors trained in American Canoe Association (ACA) Adaptive Paddling. Instructors are skilled in modifying kayaks with specialized equipment to accommodate a wide range of physical needs.

The facility features an accessible dock equipped with:

  • A ramp for easy water access

  • A transfer seat to assist participants into kayaks

  • A kayak launch system designed to provide a smooth and safe entry into the river

The program also welcomes community members to serve as volunteers. Volunteers play a critical role in creating a safe and supportive environment for participants.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Transporting kayaks and equipment

  • Assisting participants with transfers

  • Making adaptations to kayaks as needed

  • Serving as on-water support paddlers

All volunteer responsibilities are covered in an online training program. Prior kayaking experience or personal equipment is not required, only a willingness to learn, support others, and actively participate.

Visit https://www.SandySpringsGa.gov/Adaptive-Recreation for program dates and times. Volunteer training begins in April, with programs launching in June.
