BALTIMORE, MD (November 4, 2025) - The Maryland Department of Labor is launching a new registration process for household goods movers in Maryland to support fair and safe practices across the industry. Household goods movers will be required to receive this registration in order to provide moving services within the state of Maryland, and a searchable database of registered movers will be available through the Maryland Department of Labor website.
A person or company may not charge for household goods moving services in Maryland using a commercial motor vehicle unless they are registered as a household goods mover with the Maryland Department of Labor. In submitting their registration, the applicant must provide proof that they meet liability, cargo, and workers compensation insurance coverage requirements included under Maryland Annotated Code, Business Regulation Article, Title 8.5; COMAR 09.30.01.01-.10.
"This registry will make it possible for Maryland consumers to verify that moving companies carry insurance and are in compliance with Maryland law," says Maryland Secretary of Labor Portia Wu. "The insurance requirements mean it will also help protect movers in the event they are injured on the job or expensive items are damaged during a move."
The registration requirement applies to moves within the state of Maryland, regardless of where the moving company is located.
The Maryland Department of Labor Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing will make applications available starting December 1, 2025, and this requirement will be enforced beginning March 1, 2026.
Household goods movers should take the following steps to prepare for the launch of the registration process:
