Rebecca Gayheart Dane on Finding Out About Eric Dane's ALS Diagnosis and How They Told Their Daughters
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/pFbBIVDAFZ5K
Drew: When he told you that he got this diagnosis, what was your thoughts about how you would tell your kids and then what ended up really transpiring?
Rebecca: When the call came in, one of my daughters was in the, in the bathroom and I said, 'Hold on, honey, I have to take a phone call. I'm gonna go in my closet.' And I knew what the call was. And I had to ask her to leave the room, but she wouldn't, and the call happens, and you know it was a really difficult phone call and she heard it. She heard it and when I came out of the closet, she goes, 'What's going on?' And I was like, 'Honey, I'm gonna talk to you about it later.' I said 'I can't talk about it right now. I'm gonna get back to you on that.' And that's what I do when I don't have the right answer or I'm not, you know, I always say I'll get back to you on that. Just give me a minute. And then we ended up calling our family therapist and we met with the therapist, Eric, myself, the kids, and we told them what ALS was. It was really hard to tell them because they had so many questions and they were, you know, they'd never heard of ALS before, so when we said this is a disease that has no cure. They'd be like, 'But Dad's gonna be fine, right?' And if we said, you know, it's a fatal disease, like, you know, none of those, it's not like having a conversation with an adult where -
Drew: You can grasp it.
Rebecca: Yeah, yeah, they couldn't wrap their heads around it and also for that matter -
Drew: Do they even want to accept it?
Rebecca: No.
Rebecca on Eric Letting All His Insecurities Go
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/HoZMuTIhgdQG
Drew: That you know what it was he released or what the happiness was really based in.
Rebecca: I think probably, and this is just a guess. I think he stopped feeling, I think he stopped beating himself up and shaming himself for his addiction issues. I think he let go of his insecurities. Because he was such an insecure guy for someone who was so smart and so charming and so good looking, boy, he was insecure. Which you had to know him really well to know that about him because he hid it really so, so well, right? I think he let all of that go, and I think he finally just because he knew it was going to end, he wanted it. It's that, you always want what you can't have. It's that like, you know, he was told your life is going to end.
Drew: Do you think that he was able to love himself?
Rebecca: Yeah. I do.
Rebecca on How She's Handling Everything as a Mother
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/NMh1cKVpgpEO
Drew: I don't know how you're handling as a mother, what you're handling.
Rebecca: Not great, by the way, and watching my kids go through something so painful that I can't fix for them, has given, has put me in a position of where I have to like just appreciate today. I really do, and everything that it brings. And then I also have to stay really present and on the ready. If those girls need me but also give them their space.
Rebecca on Why She & Eric Never Divorced & The Effect on their Kids
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/rhOeXjQuLLRp
Drew: Is it true that you guys didn't divorce?
Rebecca: No.
Drew: What do you think that did to the psychology of your kids, may I ask?
Rebecca: I will say for the kids, the bad, the negative that maybe it gave them was hope that maybe we could reconcile, which was never going to happen, and we made that really clear to the kids, but I don't know what goes on in a kid's mind, but the good thing that came from it was that they knew that we were friends that we did our very best to co-parent the best we could, and that we were a family that was for me the word family was everything and so that's why I think divorce was really hard for me and I had such a hard time accepting the fact that I wasn't gonna have this thing that I really wanted and really had worked hard for and thought I had created, but I do believe that Billie and Georgie would sit here and if anyone asked them and say our family was kept intact.
Rebecca on Making Pact with Her Daughter to Watch Eric Doing "Famous Last Words" with Brad Falchuck
https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/Vrkjyr8yBvTW
Drew: I'm so glad that Eric did 'Famous Last Words' with Brad Falchuk, who I asked, 'Why are you doing this? I need to understand.'
Rebecca: What did he say?
Drew: He said the thing I needed to hear the most, I wanna make friends with death.
Rebecca: Wait, Brad said that? It's interesting because when Eric, just so you know, when Eric called me and said, 'So I'm gonna do this thing, it's the last words' he was like, it's kind of like a podcast. And so I didn't really understand what he was doing. So it was, it was a shock when it, and I kind of got angry at first. I was like, 'What is this? What is this? Do we know about this?' And they were like, 'Oh yes, no, this was, remember?' And I was like, 'Oh, he made it sound like a little podcast he was doing.' Like he really underplayed what it was. And, on purpose for sure.
Drew: Did you watch it?
Rebecca: I didn't watch it in its entirety because I promised one of my daughters watched it, one of my daughters has not, and we have made a pact to watch it together, and we haven't found, we haven't both felt like it was the right time at the same time, so I am waiting to do that, but we saw so many clips that were circulating, you know what I mean? We saw the main clips.
