The Columbia Police Department submitted on Sept. 30 an amended probable cause statement to the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. This probable cause statement upgraded the offense to the charge of second-degree murder for Misael Covarrubias, 23, of Fellsmore, Florida.
At about 1:40 a.m. Sept. 27, Columbia Police responded to a shooting in the 900 block of East Broadway. Police officers located one adult male and two adult females with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical care was given to the victims. They were taken to a local hospital. One of the females, Aiyanna Williams, 21, of Columbia, died of injuries she sustained in the shooting.
Columbia Police took Covarrubias into custody at 1:47 a.m. Investigators found that Covarrubias was in a verbal altercation in the area of Ninth Street and Broadway and discharged a firearm multiple times toward the people with whom he was in an altercation. Investigators determined that the three gunshot victims were in the 1000 block of East Broadway and were not involved in the altercation.
Covarrubias was initially arrested on charges of three counts of first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652.
