40th IBBY World Congress a Resounding Success

The 40th IBBY World Congress, hosted by IBBY Canada in Ottawa from August 6 to 9, 2026, brought together more than 500 professionals from approximately 60 countries, including publishers, authors, illustrators, librarians, educators, researchers, and literacy advocates. The event reaffirmed the importance of children's literature as a powerful tool for literacy development, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.

Under the theme Listening to Each Other's Voices, Congress participants examined how stories can help young readers navigate an increasingly complex world. Discussions emphasized inclusion, diversity, accessibility, and the growing need for children's books that reflect a wide range of languages, cultures, and lived experiences.

Among the Congress's most significant initiatives was the launch of the IBBY-UNESCO Collection of Remarkable Books for Young Readers in Indigenous and Endangered Languages. Showcasing titles from around the world, the collection highlighted the importance of publishing in languages that remain largely underrepresented in global markets. Its introduction coincides with the UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) and serves as a reminder of the publishing community's role in safeguarding linguistic heritage for future generations.

The commitment to representation was also reflected in Reading with Pride: Stories for Everyone, an exhibition of nearly 300 children's picture books featuring 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, families, and experiences. Developed from the collection of Alberta Senator Kristopher Wells and expanded through a national call by IBBY Canada, the exhibition illustrated how publishing can contribute to both inclusion and cultural preservation.

The Congress also marked an important development for the Hans Christian Andersen Award (HCAA). The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) of Malaysia was welcomed as a new sponsor, joining longstanding supporter Nami Island Arts & Education. The partnership strengthens international support for children's literature while positioning Selangor and the Raja Tun Uda Library as emerging centers for HCAA-related activities and global collaboration. Many publishers were already familiar with PPAS through visits organized during the 2026 IPA Congress.

The event concluded with the presentation of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards to Michael Rosen (Writing) and Cai Gao (Illustration), celebrating excellence and innovation in children's literature worldwide.
