AFP: Almost 200 people in northern Zambia affected by a major toxic spill at a copper mine have filed an US$ 80 billion lawsuit against two Chinese-linked firms, Sino Metals Leach and NFC Africa Mining. Does the Foreign Ministry have a comment on this?
Lin Jian: It's learned that in the wake of the incident, the companies concerned actively stepped up to their responsibilities, voluntarily cooperated with the Zambian government in handling the incident, and compensated affected local residents. On August 7, the Zambian government held a press briefing to provide a detailed progress report on the handling of the incident. They gave recognition to the effort made by the Chinese companies. You may refer to the press briefing if you're interested.
We have and will continue to request Chinese companies overseas to abide by local laws and regulations in their operation, pay special attention to their corporate responsibilities and strictly protect the environment. In that context, we also support Chinese companies in defending their lawful rights and interests in accordance with the law.
CCTV: UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at a recent press conference that China's global initiatives are totally compatible with UN Charter. He also said that in these initiatives, "there is a full respect to multilateralism...full support of the UN as the central piece of multilateral institutions and a strong commitment in relation to international cooperation and the peaceful resolution of conflicts." What's China's comment?
Lin Jian: We appreciate the statement by Secretary-General António Guterres. China firmly upholds the UN's core position in the international system, practices true multilateralism, and always works as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, a defender of the international order and a provider of public goods. President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Development Initiative to focus on solving unbalanced and inadequate development and promote sustainable development across the world; the Global Security Initiative that advocates dialogue rather than confrontation, partnership rather than alliance, and win-win rather than zero-sum, to tackle various risks and challenges; and the Global Civilization Initiative to enhance people-to-people bonds and inclusiveness and mutual learning among civilizations.
Not long ago, President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative at the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus" meeting, in which he outlined the core tenets of "adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating the people-centered approach and focusing on taking real actions." That provides the fundamental guidance, method and path to follow for building a more just and equitable global governance system. President Xi Jinping once again explained the profound meaning of the Global Governance Initiative at the subsequent Virtual BRICS Summit. It has been well received in the international community, and many countries and international organizations have expressed welcome and support for the Initiative.
The four global initiatives are consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. They are different in focus but mutually reinforcing. They will, from different angles, bring more positive energy to the world of interwoven changes and turbulence and provide stronger impetus to human development and progress. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the UN. As a founding member of the UN and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to deepen cooperation with the UN, advance the implementation of the four global initiatives, and join hands with the international community to uphold world peace and promote development and prosperity.
AFP: Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said he was disappointed by a Financial Times report that China's internet regulator had instructed companies including Alibaba and ByteDance to terminate orders for Nvidia's RTX Pro 6000D chips. Can the Foreign Ministry comment on this and also confirm the FT report?
Lin Jian: I'd refer you to competent authorities for anything specific. We oppose taking discriminatory measures against certain countries on trade and tech issues. China is willing to maintain dialogue and cooperation with the world to keep the global industrial and supply chains stable.
CRI: Last week, the Economist and the New York Times wrote that the U.S. has adopted an aggressive policy of pressuring Latin American countries this year, claiming to push out China's "exploitative practices" in an effort to safeguard regional security and stability. The U.S. coerced regional countries to limit or even cut ties with China but it offers little in return. The U.S. sanctions, tariffs and its use of military muscle are pushing the region closer to China. What's your comment?
Lin Jian: The commentary yet again shows that coercion and pressuring as well as bullying only serve to push countries away and will increasingly not work.
China and Latin America are good friends and good partners for equality, mutual benefit and common development. Openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation are the hallmark of China-LAC cooperation. A closer partnership is the choice of the Chinese and Latin American peoples and serves the common interest of both sides. Latin America is no one's backyard and has the right to independently choose development path and cooperation partners. China welcomes countries around the world developing friendly and cooperative ties with Latin American countries based on equality and respect. We urge the U.S. to stop forcing them to choose sides, stop interfering in their domestic affairs and do more to contribute to their development and prosperity, instead of meddling and sowing discord. No attempt to disrupt China's friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation with Latin America will ever succeed.
AFP: The U.S. disinformation watchdog NewsGuard reported that state media from countries including China are exploiting conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination to advance thousands of false claims aimed at undermining the U.S. Does the Foreign Ministry have a comment on this?
Lin Jian: I have already made clear China's position. China condemns all illegal violent behaviors. We are also firmly opposed to some institutions and people in the U.S. directing the issue at China and firmly opposed to spreading disinformation to smear and tarnish China.
AFP: U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader are expected to hold a call. Can the Foreign Ministry give us any additional details about the call and your expectations?
Lin Jian: I have no information to offer.
Reuters: "Evil Unbound," the Chinese film about Unit 731, is opening in theaters in China today and also in other countries in the coming days. What is the main takeaway for foreign governments as China rolls out one World War II film after another this year? Is there a special message for Japan?
Lin Jian: The purpose of China's major commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War is to remember history, honor fallen heroes, cherish peace and create a better future. Films on this topic are made to remind people what can be learned from that part of history and the absolute importance of defending peace. China is an open, inclusive and safe country. We welcome people from all countries including Japan to travel, study, do business and live in China, and will continue to protect the safety of all foreigners in China.
